From Vienna to Boise—With a Scoop of Passion
The journey began when native Austrian Zbynek “Spin” Mlynarik introduced his American family to the magic of Authentic Italian Gelato. Their immediate love for the rich, creamy dessert sparked an idea: to bring the true taste of Europe to the U.S.
Driven by passion and precision, Spin immersed himself in the art of gelato-making, training under some of Europe’s finest gelato masters. That dedication led to the creation of My Vienna Gelato, a brand built on traditional techniques and uncompromising quality.
Today, Black Market Gelato can be found in some of the finest restaurants, hotels, resorts, specialty markets, and grocery stores across the country. Yet at its heart, the mission remains unchanged:
To create gelato and sorbet so authentic, so rich in flavor and texture, that it could only come from a true Italian Gelateria — so good, it’s hard to believe it’s legal.
Bringing Authentic European Gelato to Boise
After years of delighting Southern California with authentic European gelato, Black Market Gelato sought a new home that resonated with its values of community and quality. In 2020, founder Zbynek "Spin" Mlynarik relocated to Boise, Idaho, and was captivated by its welcoming atmosphere and vibrant culture. Recognizing a kindred spirit in the city, Spin envisioned Boise as the ideal place to expand and share the rich traditions of Italian gelato.
In January 2023, this vision materialized as Black Market Gelato broke ground on a state-of-the-art 93,000-square-foot production facility near the Boise Airport. This significant investment not only underscored the company's commitment to craftsmanship but also to the Boise community, with plans to create numerous local jobs and foster economic growth.
By September 2023, the dream was fully realized with the grand opening of the Boise facility. Community members and dignitaries, including Mayor Lauren McLean, celebrated the occasion, marking a new chapter for Black Market Gelato. This move to Boise represents more than expansion; it embodies a dedication to blending authentic European flavors with the heart of Idaho, ensuring that every scoop tells a story of tradition, passion, and community.
